Custom Air Products & Services, Inc. Brings home the Bronze for the 8th Year In a Row!

Posted on

Custom Air Products & Services, Inc., is proud to announce their 8th year of recognition as Hard Crafts Medium-Bronze Award from Houston Business Roundtable & Houston Area Safety Council.

On May 19, 2017, CAPS along with 1400 plus industry representatives from owners and contract companies attended a celebration recognizing Greater Houston Area contractors for their outstanding safety performance hosted by the Houston Business Roundtable (HBR) & Houston Area Safety Council (HASC).  This year marks the 30th anniversary of The Houston Safety Excellence Awards where many Houston Gulf Coast  area  chemical, refining and energy companies come together in a cooperative effort with the contractors that provide construction and maintenance services to improve on-site safety, reduce accidents, and most important, reduce injuries to personnel.

For the past eight years, CAPS has been nominated by Dupont LaPorte Safety Team and has been the recipient of Hard Crafts Medium-Bronze Award, which is a distinguished “World Class” award that demonstrates CAPS commitment to safety year after year. Other major components used to measure safety are Total Recordable Industry Rate (TRIR) and Experienced Modified Rate (EMR).

TRIR is the measure of the rate of recordable workplace injuries, normalized per one hundred workers (or 200,000 man-hours) per year. Recordable cases involve occupational death and any non-fatal occupational illnesses including loss of consciousness, restriction of work or motion, transfer to another job, or any medical treatment other than first aid. CAPS has had minimal recordable injuries since June of 2011, making this the fifth year of a near perfect TRIR.EMR is a number used by insurance companies to gauge both past cost of injuries and future probabilities of risk. The EMR of 1 is considered to be the industry average. In the past three years, CAPS has had EMR scores of .70 in 2014, .66 in 2015, and .62 in 2016, with all three scores being well below the industry average.

Advantages of A Custom HVAC Unit!

Posted on

There are many advantages of considering a custom designed HVAC unit, the greatest of which is the four different styles of construction that CAPS has to offer their customers.

So, you might ask: “Why have four different styles of construction?”

The answer is simple: Cost.  Choosing the style of construction is critical and can save you time and money on the build and installation of the unit.

The first style of construction that CAPS offers is a unitized, single piece, constructed unit for ease of hoisting and movement into place.

In contrast, our second type of construction gives CAPS the ability to build a unit in sections, where components, such as fans and coils, remain mounted in each section, thus allowing a “plug and play” installation.

A third type of construction, which is referred to as “knock-down construction” allows a unit to be completely disassembled and then reassembled, with each piece being carried into place.  This eliminates the need for moving obstructions in the path of the installation or knocking out and removing walls, etc., which can add additional costly expenses to the installation.

Lastly, the fourth style of construction that CAPS offers is its fully welded frame for rigid environment applications.

The advantages that CAPS offer in providing four different styles of construction allows greater flexibility to customers, but it also saves them time and money.  Regardless of the project requirements, CAPS offers flexibility on both design and construction, thus allowing us to meet every custom designed HVAC equipment need.

Custom HVAC Design Process | CAPS

caps3DprintersCustom HVAC Design Process Streamlined with 3-D Printers

The custom HVAC design process continues to be streamlined at CAPS with the addition of two 3-D printers! The two MakerBot Replicator Z18s were obtained over the last two years in order to stay on the cutting edge of technology in manufacturing and fabrication. CAPS has been putting the two machines to work, experimenting with exactly what they can do, and CAPS has been pleased with the results. Some of the prototyped parts are used to prove fit and function before being fabricated and manufactured in the shop, while others can actually be utilized as manufactured components.

CAPS Manufactures and Fabricates Custom HVACs Efficiently!

David Potts, Senior Designer & Design Supervisor at CAPS, gave a short tour and demo on how the whole process works. In-house engineers first design and model the component required using field measurements or customer provided specifications. Then that draft is selected by David Potts and monitored as it prints out on one of the 3-D printers. Each 3-D printed part can take from minutes to days to print dependent upon the part size, complexity and resolution required. CAPS3Dpause

During the printing process, the operation can be paused at any point and the mini-model can be removed from the printer and visually inspected. After inspection it can be placed back in position and the printing process can continue.

What is phenomenal about it, and extremely environmentally-friendly, is a 1.75 MM plastic filament called Polylactic Acid or PLA. PLA is a biodegradable thermoplastic aliphatic polyester derived from renewable resources such as corn or sugarcane. In following with CAPS’ eye towards the future, they have also invested in equipment to take any failed prints, scraps and prototypes that are no longer needed and recycle them into new filament to be used on other prints. David Potts is especially pleased that there almost zero waste from the entire process! It’s an efficient process and truly encompasses what CAPS is all about.
