It’s a typical Saturday morning at the CAPS campus and although the site has a Monday through Friday work schedule, the parking lot is full. In the large space between the Fabrication shops, a huge tent, known as the “CAPS Cooler” is erected and a 60-ton prototype “rental unit” cools the space. The crews take a break from their work to enjoy breakfast, a meal provided by CAPS. Weekends often include a lunch meal as well. The space, however, is always there, the cooling always running, and the area always available for workers to take a break, cool down, relax for a few minutes, and gear up for another round of work activities.
I have to admit that I really like working on the weekends myself. I can crank up my music, kick off my shoes, and know that my phone is not going to ring. But my job these days is a mental strain rather than a physical one, and I’m pretty sure I would not be able to hold up to the rigors of working in the shop during the summer any more. But I so admire our folks that can and do.
The CAPS weekend warriors are the heart of our company and often the ones most responsible for keeping customers happy and helping them meet their business goals. Meeting deadlines, rearranging unit lineups, cutting, fabricating, painting, wiring, plumbing, assembling…weekends see these guys doing it all. And sometimes I think that if our customers could see what a Saturday morning at CAPS is like around here, they would understand why we focus so heavily on our quality. Watch our guys in action on the weekend and you’ll understand too…we are the industry leader because we earn it.
